The city of Rio de Janeiro is world famous for its tourist attractions, such as Christ the Redeemer, Tijuca Forest, Pedra da Gávea and Carnival among others.

But there is a special tour that will provide a unique experience for Brazilians and foreigners alike: visiting Poço das Antas Biological Reserve. Located in the northern region of Rio, it is  the home of Golden-lion-tamarin, an endangered species of primates, from the Callitrichidae family, natives of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. This magnificent primate is known worldwide for its golden fur, which gives it a unique and charming appearance.

There are various species of Lion Tamarin:

  1. Golden lion tamarin.
  2. Black-faced golden tamarin.
  3. Golden-headed lion tamarin
  4. Golden lion tamarin with crest.
  5. Black-faced lion tamarin.
  6. White-faced lion tamarin.
  7. Pink-faced lion tamarin (Leontopithecus caissara).

The Poço das Antas Biological Reserve has a wide variety of fauna and flora, making it an ideal place for those who desire a closer contact with nature. Since its creation on September 16, 1974, the Reserve has the objective of preserving and protecting the Golden Lion tamarin in its natural habitat, as well as the lives of all species of animals and plants in the area. In addition to its stunning beauty, visitors can enjoy a complete infrastructure with rest areas, bathrooms, and kiosks with food and drinks for their comfort and convenience.

It is important to say that the Golden Lion Tamarin only exists in our country, and its presence is essential for the ecosystem of our Atlantic Forest. These small primates help in the dispersal of seeds from various plant species, and their preservation is essential for maintaining the biodiversity of the region. To this regard, numerous actions have been implemented by the team of the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve to increase the population of this endangered species, such as: Fight against illegal hunting, reforestation of degraded areas, creation of environmental protection areas, breeding programs and the creation of green viaducts or vegetated viaducts.

It is essential to raise awareness among people about the importance of preserving the Golden Lion Tamarin, as well as the entire ecosystem of the Atlantic Forest. And also to sensitize people towards nature and encourage sustainable practices for living in harmony with the environment. In addition to observing these wonderful small animals, the Biological Reserve also offers educational activities, lectures, and guided tours.

The National Park is also a highly sought-after destination for those who wish to observe the various types of birds of the region,  so I recommend a visit to the two Observation Towers, for the scenery will certainly enchant you.

Poço das Antas Biological Reserve is a true refuge for those seeking tranquility and contact with nature. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the preservation and conservation work of the staff at this place, makes this region one of the most special destinations for tourists, nature lovers and those who care about environmental preservation.

Truly, the Golden Lion Tamarin represents a true treasure of Brazilian biodiversity that needs to be preserved, as its extinction would represent an irreparable loss for the fauna and for the identity of our country. As a master in local development, I sincerely believe that Poço das Antas Biological Reserve is a successful example of the union between environmental education, biodiversity preservation and sustainable tourism, in defense of a more balanced and harmonious future for next generations.
