When you are living in a foreign country, it is normal to desire to maintain the ties with your roots. For this reason, in 1837, a group of Portuguese immigrants found the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet, located on Luís de Camões street. Here, we have a famous saying: The first impression is the one that stays”, and even before entering the Royal Cabinet, you are already fascinated by the architecture of the building, in the Neo Manuelino style (architectural and decorative arts style developed in Portugal between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries), its colored stained glass windows and the stone details.

A visit to this incredible Cultural Center represents an opportunity to delve into history and the magic of words, as well as a true journey through time, in which the tourist can indulge in more than 350,000 works, including rare documents, manuscripts, books, and even periodicals. In addition to these treasures, the traveler can find incredible rarities from the 16th to the 19th centuries, such as the writings of Luís de Camões, Gil Vicente, Almeida Garrett, and other important Lusophone writers. Among the existing treasures at the site, it is worth to mention:

  • Engravings of ‘The Maias’ from the novel by Eça de Queiroz released in 1888.

  • A letter from the architect of the Royal Cabinet of 1872.

  • The French engraving of Camões portraying the author of “The Lusiads”.

  • Tribute to aviation and signature of Santos Dumont, our aviation pioneer.

It is also highly valued for its digital library, allowing people from all over the world to access part of its cultural heritage online.
