In what city in the world could people on a Monday go out with friends and have an incredible night with beautiful people, good food and drinks and dance? The answer is simple, that is, Rio de Janeiro.
Yes that’s right. Every Monday samba musicians and bohemians gather in a very special corner in the Saúde neighborhood near Conceição Hill. This place is called Pedra do Sal, the birthplace of samba in Brazil that hosts musicians and composers on monday nights to promote special moments that enchant everyone.
It is worth highlighting the history of this place dating back to the period of colonial Brazil as during this time African slaves would disembark at the Valongo wharf near Pedra do Sal where they would gather to pray, play drums and dance thereby preserving their African traditions. The place is known as “Little Africa” and the birthplace of urban Rio de Janeiro samba. In 1984 it was declared a heritage site becoming a historical and cultural treasure of the city of Rio de Janeiro.
Over the years, Pedra do Sal has emerged as a highly sought-after tourist attraction for visitors who want to learn about the history and culture of samba, visit the bars and restaurants in the area, taste the region’s typical food and witness cultural events such as samba performances, film screenings, commemorative events, graffiti at Pedra do Sal, art exhibitions, lectures, capoeira and themed cuisine.
The Xperiencer Tour Brazil promotes a tour called Little Africa allowing tourists to learn about the history of the black people in Brazil taking them to important places such as Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict Church, the Stevedores Square, the Suspended Garden of Valongo, the Valongo Wharf, the Conceição Hill, historical buildings in the area, the Salt Rock among other places.
We can say that Pedra do Sal is more than just a tourist spot in Rio de Janeiro it is a landmark in the history of Brazil, one of the most democratic and historic spaces in the Wonderful City and a symbol of resistance that allows to rescue, preserve and disseminate the Afro-Brazilian culture, in other words, a place of celebration where people can experience the richness of afro-brazilian popular culture.
