However, there are some beaches that are a true paradise, unknown even by the citizens of our city, and we are going to introduce to you a very special beach of our amazing city..
The Secret Beach doesn’t have any type of service or even support structure for the visitors. But this is not a disadvantage, because the visitor will be able to enjoy a greater contact with nature, and, because of this, many people are attracted to this little paradise.
In fact, what we call the Secret Beach, is actually a natural pool without a strip of sand, surrounded by vast vegetation and monumental stones. This natural pool is 5 meters wide and 12 meters long. When the tide is low and the sea is calm, it is possible to float and swim in the translucent waters. It is necessary to highlight the incredible landscape we can glimpse from this incredible spot.
If you like beaches and adventure, the Secret Beach is perfect for you. Well now that we’ve piqued your interest, we will explain how to get to this place. This beach is located in the west of our city in a neighborhood called Recreio dos Bandeirantes, between Prainha (Little Beach) and Macumba Beach. There are two access routes: By the Mirante do Roncador or crossing the small channel and walking along the sand strip..
The Mirante of Roncador trial is the safest way to access the Secret Beach. After reaching the end of Macumba Beach, you walk along Estado da Guanabara Avenue, which gives you access to Prainha. This road provides an awesome landscape. After a few minutes, you are at Mirante do Roncador. If you go by car, there is parking space for free. On the other side of the parking lot, there is a natural water source that will freshen up your day.

The trail can be covered in 15 minutes, but you need to be very careful as the rock wall is very steep. Don’t try to take photos or play during the descent and ascent of the trail.
You should only take what is essential: small snacks, water and sunscreen in a backpack with two straps in order to help you to move on the trail. It is normal to wear flip-flops or even go barefoot to the beach, but if you intend to go to Secret beach, you must take sneakers in order to guarantee greater safety on the rock wall.
If you want more excitement, you can get to the Secret Beach by crossing the canal located at the end of Macumba Beach, and continue along the sand strip for 10 or 15 minutes, until you reach the rocks that access the natural pool.
Personally, I prefer to access Secret Beach by the Mirante do Roncador trail. Because walking, cycling, or going by motorbike or car along Estado da Guanabara Avenue will guarantee you a true natural spectacle, as the landscape is incredible. Another advantage is being able to drink delicious fresh water from a fountain out of a rock. Last, but not least, the visitor can enjoy moments of leisure on the swing at Mirante do Roncador, with its breathtaking view of the seashore.
Two recommendations to make this day an special experience:
- Consult the Tide Table (https://pt.tideschart.com/Brazil/Rio-de-Janeiro/) because if the tide is high, it can be very dangerous at the Secret Beach; and the pool will disappear if the tide is very low.
- Regardless of the access route you are going to choose, pay close attention while walking through the trail in order to avoid any kind of accidents.
For quite a long time the Secret beach was known only by the people who live in the neighborhood and even today it is unknown to the vast majority of people who live in the city.
