Tourism represents a significant sector of the global economy. Following the COVID-19 pandemic it has been steadily growing contributing according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) US$10.9 trillion to the Gross World Product (GWP) in 2024. During this period tourism accounted for 10% of the global economy, generating 357 million jobs worldwide  meaning 1 in every 10 jobs globally is directly related to tourism industry.

Beyond generating employment and income tourism faces a major challenge or rather an immense responsibility: to universalize the experience of exploring other cultures and enjoying unforgettable moments through travel. However people with disabilities encounter numerous difficulties, such as:

  • Accessibility barriers in tourist destinations, including:

  1. Tourist attractions.
  2. Public restrooms.
  3. Accommodation.
  4. Transportation (public and private).
  5.
  • Limited availability of accessible tourist destinations and leisure activities for people with disabilities.

  • Difficulty obtaining reliable information about the level of accessibility in the destination (Accommodation, transport and tourist attractions).

  • Lack of training for professionals to serve people according to the specific needs of various types of disabilities (Hearing, visual, intellectual and physical).

  • High costs for tourism making this activity feasible only for people with higher purchasing power.

Accessible tourism represents a powerful instrument for social inclusion and access to a fundamental human right. The World Health Organization reports that over 1 billion people (15% to 16% of the global population) live with some form of disability worldwide. Therefore we must recognize the potential of this select public for the development and growth of tourism. In this regard according to the World Tourism Organization:

  • Approximately two-thirds of people with disabilities have the purchasing power to travel.

  • Spending on air travel by people with disabilities was US$11 billion in 2022.

  • This group demonstrates high loyalty to more accessible tourist destinations.

  • The vast majority of people with disabilities travel accompanied by family members, friends or even caregivers.
